International Environmental Agreements Review: Progress and Challenges
International environmental agreements (IEAs) have been established to tackle global environmental challenges and promote sustainable development. These agreements are binding commitments between countries to take action to address pressing environmental issues, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. IEAs are crucial in promoting global action and cooperation towards a sustainable future. In this article, we will review some of the major IEAs, their progress, and challenges.
Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015, is one of the most well-known and significant IEAs in recent years. It aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The agreement has been ratified by 189 countries and is a significant milestone in the global fight against climate change.
However, despite the Paris Agreement`s significance, progress towards achieving its goals has been slow. Many countries have yet to meet their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the world is still on track for a temperature rise of more than 3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated matters, with many countries diverting resources towards recovery efforts rather than climate action.
Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed in 1992 with the objective of conserving biological diversity, promoting the sustainable use of its components, and ensuring the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. The CBD has been ratified by 196 countries and is a crucial agreement in promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Despite the CBD`s importance, progress towards achieving its goals has been slow. Biodiversity loss continues at an alarming rate, with many species facing extinction. The CBD`s 2020 targets, which aimed to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss, were not met. There is a need for greater political will and action to address biodiversity loss and promote sustainable development.
Basel Convention
The Basel Convention, adopted in 1989, is an IEA that aims to protect human health and the environment from hazardous wastes. The convention has been ratified by 189 countries and is a significant agreement in promoting the safe management of hazardous waste.
However, the Basel Convention faces several challenges. The illegal dumping of hazardous waste in developing countries is still a significant issue, and the current regulations may not be comprehensive enough to cover all hazardous waste streams. There is a need for stronger regulations and greater cooperation between countries to address hazardous waste management.
Conclusion
IEAs are crucial in promoting global action and cooperation towards a sustainable future. While there has been progress on many fronts, there is still a long way to go in achieving the goals set out in these agreements. Stronger regulations, greater political will, and increased action are needed to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable development. As individuals, we can also do our part by adopting more sustainable practices in our daily lives. Together, we can work towards a greener and more sustainable future.
